UPRIGHT JUNIPER: ROBUSTA GREEN, LATIN NAME: JUNIPERUS CHINENSIS 'ROBUSTA'
This upright evergreen’s bright green foliage persists throughout the year. Its irregular, colunmar growth habit reaches 10-15 feet tall (3+ feet wide). Its size and density make it ideally used as a hedge, screen, accent, and windbreak.
The Growing rate in first year is medium to fast in Cumberland county soil, 6 to 12" a year, sometimes more.
Amount of Sunlight: Thrives in full sun; Tolerates shade
Amount of Water:
Fall or Winter Planting, plant on a warm day ~ water as your feeling in the hole, then wait a week, if ground is still moist ~ no need to water, if ground is dry a 2 to 3 inches down ~ give a 5 second water with the hose. This plant doesn't require much water and sometimes not at all in fall and winter (providing its in the ground and given a good soak at time of planting) You should be able to go without watering for at least two weeks after planting. After 12 months in the ground, you shouldn't have to water it at all, unless its been long periods of extreme heat.
Spring and Summer Planting: Water regularly when first planting (twice a week for a couple of weeks); more frequent watering in extreme heat, until established; Drought tolerant ~ so no worries if you don't get around to watering.
Soil Conditions: Adaptable to most soils; Prefers dry, well-drained soil; Not tolerant of overly wet soil for long periods of time.
Cold Hardiness Zone: 4-9 Cumberland County is in zone 8
The Care ~ When first planting:
This low-maintenance upright evergreen doesn't need pruning, but you can trim if you want. Watering as needed occasionally in first one to two years, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly, but not as often as other plants.
