Reading for Success is a literacy program in Lumberton. The program supports children who are at risk of falling behind due to the lack of basic literacy skills and adult non-readers who wish to better their reading skills. Tutors meet with students twice a week for about a half hour to an hour a session and work on building the skills needed to become better readers. The program's office is located in the Robeson County Chruch and Community Center in Lumberton, although the program tutors serve in many locations throughout the community.

Right now the program needs tutors and someone who can help with the recruiting of tutors. Tutors must be able to read and write in English and should be over the age of 17. These are volunteer, non-paid positions. Tutors are expected to be able to commit at least two hours a week and should be able to make a commitment of at least three months if not for the entire school year. Trainings are held for those who need it, and all tutors must attend orientation.

Congress has chartered the USO as a non-profit charitable corporation.
Distance Mentors Wanted! Pledge Sigma Theta Rho (All US States)

Want to do something meaningful? Want to contribute positively to the lives of young people in other parts of the country? Then please - consider pledging SIGMA THETA RHO (STR). Membership is open to males and females ages 11 to adult.

Before we go too far, we want to explain what pledging is in our fraternity. The only activities you'll be asked to do as a pledge are: (a) answer email when you receive it; (b) respond to posts on our MySpace and/or Facebook pages when you can; (c) perform community service activities in your neighborhood; (d) distance mentor some kids who are part of our youth chapter and (e) attend events when you can. THAT'S ALL!!!

All of these activities earn what we call "points" and you need 116 points in order to be crossed over into membership. The deadline to earn your points is in May, 2010. Because you don't live here in New York - we help you significantly with earning your points - that's why having an active email account will become so significant!

You wouldn't believe the impact that you can have on a child - even if you are thousands of miles away. Every person who lives in every state has a different story and kids need to hear all of them. We can't save every child, but we can at least try to save the ones that we can touch.

Once you become a member, you can remain in our organization for as long as you'd like. Our mission is to reach at least one person in every state and build a foundation that will one day hold up one of the most influential voices in community service -- the voices of SIGMA THETA RHO! So far, we have managed to attract at least one person in Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and we also have members in Egypt and Nigeria.

Pledging doesn't cost anything but your time and effort. The deadline is NOVEMBER 5th. Won't you join us??

Joy the Basset Hound Needs Help! (Sanford)

Hello,

My name is Kelly Casper.

I am writing this in hope that someone could help in any way. First I will start off about the story of Joy.

Last June I was working at Nash County Animal Control, in Nashville, North Carolina. That is the day I seen the sweetest dog in the world. Joy the Basset Hound. She was covered in flees, had hook worms, and was just heart broken to be in the pound. My husband and I discussed adopting her, thankfully we did because we saved her 30 minutes before she was gassed. After getting minor treatment for hook worms she has been a awesome pet. Joy loves tons of cuddle time, walking around the neighborhood, she loves kids, loves other dogs. And I swear I don’t think she thinks she is a dog. Joy has really taught me a lot in this past year on how to have unconditional love and hope.

Just this past month, upon getting her groomed my groomer found a odd feeling mass in her colon. So I took her to the vet to get it checked. I took joy to Willow Creek Animal Hospital, and she seen Dr. Diane Schaller, (which is a wonderful vet). Well for the past month She has been looking for a way to remove the tumor from joys colon, and because its so close to the anal glands its not going to be a simple surgery.
Today I went back for a follow up, and I was referred to Dr. Jack G. Gallagher at Veterinary Surgical Referral Practice in Cary, North Carolina.

The total cost for the procedure is $1600.00. As of today, me and my husband took out a Care Credit card, and we were approved for $500.00. I know me and my husband can come up with at least $500.00 more of what we need, but that will still leave us short. Something like is un expected and I know that everyone is having money issues now. I don’t want any free help. I am asking if you need anything done, Help around your home cleaning, cooking, baby sitting, literally ANYTHING, I will do to get help for Joy.

I know most people would wonder why anyone would spend so much money on a dog. But I don’t consider Joy as my dog. I look to her as my daughter. I have polycystic Ovarian Syndrome , my ovaries are covered in so many cyst that the chances of me ever having children are slim. Sure I could get the drugs or get implanted, but that is SUPER expensive. I am just happy with Joy. Her love alone is what keeps me smiling everyday.

So please someone out there help us, I don’t want to loose her over this. She doesn’t have any other health issues, besides this.
So if you want your home cleaned, or anything done please let me know. I would love to get an extra 500-600 dollars to help out with this surgery that she is going to need by next month.

Thank you so much everyone, for taking the time to read this, and if at any point you do not feel that you can trust this post. You can personally call Dr. Diane Schaller at (919) 776-1920 to get proof of what needs to be done. You have my name, and Joys name, and just tell them your thinking about helping.
Also I dont even know what this person is speaking of when they say 2 teenage boys. I have not mention teenage boys. Yes I have called Fayetteville Police Dept at least eight times and no they did not do anything because I didnt have proof. Not even a report. Anyway to whomever doubts it, its ok. God knows, I know and I have no reason to lie. To the sweet lady that cleaned my carpet & her husband that changed one of my locks. Thank you so much!!! To the others that helped with food & etc. Thanks so much. I am mentally torn apart but adjusting and I know God will pull me and my children through this. To the one that is calling me a fake or whatever other names, I forgive you and God Bless US ALL!

ATTN Soldiers!!THE HAVEN NEEDS VOLUNTEERS @ Petsmart and Raeford (Fayetteville/Raeford)

The Haven-Friends for Life No Kill Animal Shelter is in desperate need of volunteers! Looking for anyone who has a little spare time, or knows anyone who does and is willing to ask them to consider volunteering. We have quite a few events in the coming months and are always in need of people who can help. There is a volunteer form at the website and you can also stop by the Fayetteville Petsmart for a copy to fill out. We need people to help with Petsmart and the animals there on the weekends (any time you can spare is greatly appreciated!). Usually we need people to help clean the dog enclosures and spend time with them, walk them outside to go to the bathroom as well as talking to potential adopters. I have found this is a great opportunity for kids and their parents to do something of value together. We also have many dogs in Raeford who need walking and lots of other miscellaneous jobs. If you are injured and limited on what you can do we have lots of odds and ends you could help with. There are also many jobs like fundraising we need help with. I would be willing to carpool (and drive) if I could find some willing volunteers.:-) I will even pay for gas and pick you up if needed so it's a win/win! *You must be an adult or with a parent in order to ride in my car.

Volunteering looks great on a resume and can help with military promotions! It also makes you feel good to know you are helping these animals who didn't ask to be given up or born.

If you are unable to volunteer please consider donating items from our wish list. We need volunteer(s) to make beds for our cats. We really need someone who can use a sewing machine and make washable beds. Please email me if you can volunteer to do this so I can coordinate and get you the supplies.

The reason I put attention soldiers is in part because over 80% of the animals The Haven receives are from soldiers and it seemed like a good attention getter. We appreciate all that you do and the contributions that you make!:-)
